Italy manager Cesare Prandelli remains adamant that he must make wholesale changes to his squad in order to challenge at the World Cup in Brazil in two years time.

Italy manager Cesare Pandelli has insisted that he must make changes to his squad during the World Cup qualifying campaign as he looks towards the future.

Prandelli led Italy to the final of Euro 2012 in an impressive summer showing in Poland and Ukraine, but insists that progression remains the key.

The veteran coach told reporters at a charity event in Florence: "It is only natural to run into some initial difficulties, but our objective has to be taking this Nazionale past that hurdle and into the 2014 World Cup.

"After all, that is what Spain did after winning the World Cup. They changed 50% of the side to target Euro 2012.

"It is not easy, but we must do it, because the Italy squad has to be at least partially renovated. There will not be any new faces in the next call-ups because recently we have already brought in quite a few."

Italy have begun their campaign to qualify for Brazil in 2014 with a 2-2 draw away to Bulgaria and a comfortable 2-0 home win against Malta.
