The visitors made a perfect start to the match when Christian Benteke got the better of Johnny Heitinga before slotting past Tim Howard to give his side the lead after just three minutes.
Everton restored parity after 20 minutes when Victor Anichebe held off Ron Vlaar before beating Brad Guzan with his shot on the turn.
Villa responded by regaining the lead immediately, Gabriel Agbonlahor rising highest in the box to head an effort past Howard.

The visitors should have made it 3-1 six minutes after the restart when Charles N'Zogbia threaded a ball through to Andreas Weimann, but the striker smashed his shot well over when through on goal.
They did extend their lead on the hour mark, however, as a good move was finished by Matthew Lowton crossing it to the head of Benteke, who nodded home for his second of the game.

Everton pulled a goal back within 10 minutes as Fellaini picked up Anichebe's pass and made no mistake with his finish to make it 3-2.
Guzan saved his side from conceding another in quick succession by getting a crucial hand to a Nikica Jelavic shot.
There was heartbreak in store for the visitors, however, as Fellaini spurned away from Vlaar to convert a towering header from Leighton Baines's cross in stoppage time to make it 3-3.
