Roy Hodgson "optimistic" Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will recover for World Cup

England manager Roy Hodgson is "optimistic" that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will recover from a knee injury for the World Cup.

England manager Roy Hodgson is "optimistic" that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will remain with the World Cup squad, despite struggling with a knee injury.

The Arsenal star sustained a medial knee ligament injury during Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Ecuador in Miami.

While some reports have claimed that the 20-year-old could be out of action for three weeks, Hodgson is not prepared to send the player back to the UK.

"We will do everything in our power to keep him [in the squad]," ESPN quotes Hodgson as saying. "Our medical team are optimistic and he is optimistic.

"We can't say how long for certain it will take him to recover, but obviously he will get very extensive treatment."

England will begin their World Cup campaign in Brazil with a Group D clash against Italy on June 14.
