Harry Redknapp reveals meeting with FA technical director Dan Ashworth

Harry Redknapp reveals that he had a meeting with FA technical director Dan Ashworth, who is a member of the three-man panel that will select the next England manager.

Harry Redknapp has revealed that he has held talks with Football Association technical director Dan Ashworth as the FA continues its search for a new England manager.

Redknapp was overlooked for the role when Roy Hodgson was appointed four years ago, although his name has been mentioned in some quarters as a possible successor to the former Liverpool boss, who resigned in the wake of England's disastrous Euro 2016 campaign.

Ashworth is a member of the three-man panel that will select the next manager, and Redknapp believes that current favourite Sam Allardyce would be a good appointment, despite initially having backed Glenn Hoddle.

"I did have a meeting with Dan Ashworth. We had a coffee and a chat. It was generally about football. I enjoyed it. I had a good meeting with him, it was interesting," he told talkSPORT.

"I was in Glenn's camp, but I will be delighted if Sam gets it. Sam is a good man. He has plenty of knowledge, he will have plenty of enthusiasm for the job, so I will have no problems if Sam gets the job. I want an English manager, that is important to me. I want to see one of the English boys get it.

"It will be interesting if Sam gets the job who they put alongside him. I am sure they will want to bring in a young guy as a manager for the future. That seems to be the plan. It will be interesting who they select, if Sam gets the job, to work with him."

Ashworth will select the manager alongside Martin Glenn and David Gill.
