Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk strike late against Club Brugge to make Europa League semi-finals

An Evgeniy Shakhov late strike edges Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk into the Europa League semi-finals after a narrow 1-0 win against Club Brugge in their quarter-final second leg.

Evgeniy Shakhov's late strike has put Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk into the Europa League semi-finals after a narrow 1-0 win against Club Brugge in their quarter-final second leg in Kiev.

The visitors were quickest off the starting blocks as Nikola Storm's effort in the fourth minute was blocked away, but Dnipro countered with surging drives by Yevhen Konoplyanka and Roman Bezus that missed the target.

The visitors edged their opponents in terms of efforts and possession throughout the first half and could have broken the deadlock in injury time when Evgen Cheberyachko headed over from a corner.

Dnipro succeeded in getting the ball into the back of the net shortly after the restart when Yevhen Seleznyov made a run to get to a ball over the top before poking home, but it was disallowed for offside.

The hosts then enjoyed a good spell midway through the second half as Ruud Vormer and Mamadou Obbi Oulare threatened with decent chances.

Nevertheless, Dnipro's dominance throughout the game came to fruition when Ruslan Rotan's through-ball to Shakhov, following a swift counter-attack, was tucked past Mat Ryan with just eight minutes left to play.

The Ukrainians still had to hold on in a bid to avoid a late away goal, but they did this with little difficulty to win the tie 1-0 on aggregate and reach the last four of the Europa League.
