Bolton Wanderers fail to take chances in goalless draw

10-man Bolton Wanderers hit the bar three times in the second half as they draw 0-0 with Derby County.

Derby County have hung on for a point away at Bolton Wanderers on the opening day of the new season.

Bolton created the first chance of the game as Liam Feeney burst forward from midfield, before dragging an effort narrowly past the post.

The Rams struggled to create much going forward and were forced into an early change as the injured Craig Bryson was forced off, allowing Jeff Hendrick to enter the pitch.

Hendrick almost made an immediate impact when he pulled the ball back for Johnny Russell, who hit the crossbar.

Minutes later, Feeney crossed for Gary Madine at the other end, but his header floated wide.

Russell continued to threaten as he waltzed into the box and forced Ben Amos into a low save from a stinging effort as the visitors cranked up the pressure before the break.

Hendrick continued to make a menace of himself after the break as he put Tom Ince's free kick over the bar from the middle of the box.

Bolton newboy Madine went close again, as he was inches away from connecting with Fenney's cross yards from goal, before Jay Spearing fired straight at the keeper from distance.

The home side were the more aggressive team in the closing stages and almost took the lead through Emile Heskey, who hit the bar with a header.

The bar came to Derby's rescue again minutes later as Madine headed Wilson's cross onto the woodwork, and the striker then hit the bar for a second time after beating Scott Carson from close range.

Bolton finished the game with 10 men after Spearing was dismissed for a second yellow card.
