Chris Baird happy to bide his time at Derby County

Chris Baird says that he will 'bide his time' at Derby in pursuit of a regular starting spot, having been restricted to two substitute appearances over the past month.

Derby County skipper Chris Baird has admitted to being 'frustrated' by his lack of playing time at the club, but says that he can fully appreciate manager Paul Clement's decision.

The versatile defender has featured just twice since the start of October, with both of those run-outs coming from the bench.

Baird, who has one eye on next summer's European Championships after helping Northern Ireland secure their place in the tournament, is prepared to stay and fight for his place at the iPro Stadium.

"Me and the manager have had a few chats and I understand where he's coming from because he doesn't want to change a winning team," he told Press Association Sport. "Obviously it's frustrating but I've been in this position before, though not as the captain which is a bit stranger.

"The main thing is the boys are winning and playing really well. It's just a case of waiting and biding my time. It's literally a matter of waiting for my chance. God forbid injuries happen, but you'll have suspensions and so on. It's a long season in the Championship, so I expect to play.

"If it didn't and it was nearing the end of the season, I'd maybe have to sort something out in terms of going out on loan. That's further down the line. A lot of things can happen. I want to bide my time and take my chance when it comes."

Baird has made 10 appearances in all for the Rams since joining on a free contract in the summer.
