Diego Maradona blasts FIFA for demanding the Costa Rica players take a drugs test following their 1-0 win against Italy.

Diego Maradona has blasted FIFA for demanding that Costa Rica players take a drugs test following their 1-0 win against Italy on Friday.

The Argentine football legend said FIFA showed a "lack of respect for the rule" after insisting that seven players have the tests.

"If there were seven Costa Ricans, why weren't there seven Italians?" Maradona said on Argentine television.

"This is new. But this is happening because it hurts a lot of people to see Costa Rica get through and that world champions don't get through."

Costa Rican newspapers named the seven players sent for drugs testing as Bryan Ruiz, Michael Barrantes, Keylor Navas, Celso Borges, Christian Bolanos, Marco Urena and Diego Calvo.
