Chelsea fail with a last-ditch attempt to convince Andreas Christensen to sign a new contract, according to a report.

Chelsea have reportedly failed with a last-ditch attempt to convince Andreas Christensen to sign a new contract with the European Cup holders.

The Denmark international's deal at Stamford Bridge is due to expire at the end of June, and there has been a host of speculation surrounding his future in recent weeks.

Barcelona have overtaken Bayern Munich in the race for the defender, with the Catalan giants believed to have put a five-year contract on the table.

According to 90min, the Dane is now on the verge of penning a deal with Xavi's side, who will arrive at Camp Nou for the 2022-23 campaign.

The report claims that Chelsea launched a final attempt to keep the 25-year-old at Stamford Bridge but were informed that it was too late, with Christensen's mind already made up.

The centre-back has again been a regular for Thomas Tuchel's side during the 2021-22 campaign, making 26 appearances in all competitions, but he has only played once in the Premier League since the end of December due to injury and a positive COVID-19 test.
