The Saints have been searching for a replacement in the full-back area since Luke Shaw moved to Manchester United earlier this summer.
Bertrand will now move to St Mary's until the end of the coming season, despite the likes of Liverpool reportedly showing an interest in the defender.
The left-back spent the final few months of last season at Aston Villa on a short-term stay.
