Norwich City sink Cambridge United

Cambridge United are beaten 3-1 by Norwich City in their pre-season friendly thanks to goals from Gary Hooper, Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Harry Toffolo.

Norwich City have continued their preparations for life back in the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.

The game was played across four 30-minute periods as both sides gave run-outs to a string of first-team and reserve players.

Robbie Simpson was flagged offside inside the opening couple of minutes before he sent an effort over the top as the hosts started brightly.

Norwich were not slow out of the blocks, however, and could have taken the lead themselves had Cameron Jerome's header from a Steven Whittaker cross gone either side of Matt Duke in the Cambridge goal.

Harrison Dunk then drew a sprawling save from John Ruddy, before Barry Corr slid home Jordan Slew's cross to put Cambridge ahead.

Gary Hooper pulled the Canaries level from the penalty spot after Louis Thompson had been brought down in the box just shy of the hour mark, which served as half time.

Two minutes after the restart Norwich were ahead when Ricky van Wolfswinkel tapped home a Jacob Murphy cross from close range.

Elliott Bennett then had appeals for another penalty waved away, before Harry Toffolo fired home at the back post from Van Wolfswinkel's pass.

Sam Beasant made a dramatic late save from Gary O'Neil's curling effort, but Norwich had already done enough to seal the win.
