Blackpool secure vital win against Millwall

Blackpool secure a vital win at the bottom of the Championship as Peter Clarke's strike gives them a 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Millwall.

Blackpool have secured a vital three points at the bottom of the Championship table after Peter Clarke's header gave them a 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Millwall.

There was an early scare for Millwall as Jimmy Abdou's pass was intercepted by David Perkins, but none of his teammates could get onto the end of his cross which flashed across the face of goal.

Andrea Orlandi's low shot then forced a fine save from Millwall keeper David Forde at full stretch, before Sid Nelson cleared the loose ball.

It was an encouraging start to the match, but there were a number of stoppages due to injury as the half went on and the game suffered as a result.

Martyn Woolford, however, came close to an opening goal when his header was cleared off the line by Clarke.

Clarke's eventful half then saw him open the scoring for Blackpool when he rose highest to head home following a Jamie O'Hara set piece.

After the restart, Scott McDonald was played in by Woolford, but his lobbed pass went beyond Lee Martin at the back post.

Steven Davies maneuvered himself into space and smashed an effort wide on the half-volley before Andy Wilkinson cleared off the line when Nathan Delfouneso poked the ball towards goal.

The victory is only Blackpool's third of the season and leaves them eight points adrift of safety.
