Bayern Munich's hopes of claiming the treble under Jupp Heynckes remain alive after securing a place in the third round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday night.
The Bavarians were taken to penalties by RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena, despite playing against 10 men following Naby Keita's sending-off early in the second half.
Emil Forsberg netted from the penalty spot in normal time, five minutes before Thiago Alcantara equalised, but it was a miss from Timo Werner in the shootout that gave Bayern victory.

The early rounds of cup competitions tend to be relatively smooth sailing for the so-called bigger teams, but on this occasion, Bayern or Leipzig will face an early exit from the DFB-Pokal this evening.
With Heynckes back in charge at the Allianz Arena until the end of the season, memories of the manager's glory days have returned. The club won the treble - Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the Champions League - in 2013 under the German.
As it stands, the Bavarians are on course to qualify for the knockout rounds in the Champions League as they sit three points adrift of Group B leaders Paris Saint-Germain, while the league title is certainly in Bayern's sight given that they currently reside second in the table on level points with Borussia Dortmund.
Heynckes returned for his fourth stint in charge of Bayern on October 6 following Carlo Ancelotti's sacking and has overseen those victories, all of which recorded clean sheets. Interestingly, the team had conceded seven goals in the previous three games before Heynckes's arrival.
Everything was going swimmingly in Munich, but the team have since suffered a blow in the form of a major injury. Thomas Muller picked up a muscle tear during the club's 1-0 win over Hamburg at the weekend and as a result, will miss the next three weeks of action.

The German World Cup winner had played a full 90 minutes on just five occasions in nine outings under Ancelotti, but early indications suggested that he would be a regular in Heynckes's team having featured in all three games under the 72-year-old's leadership.
Against Freiburg, the forward created an assist in the 5-0 rout and he followed up that performance with a goal in a 3-0 triumph over Champions League opponents Celtic. Muller managed just 10 minutes on the field before he was taken off with injury at Hamburg, but in that time he made the one and only goal of the match - scored by Corentin Tolisso.
James Rodriguez may have been the obvious choice to replace injured Muller for this evening's match, but he too will be on the sidelines due to a back problem. The Real Madrid loanee has struggled for game time at the Allianz Arena, starting just two Bundesliga matches - the second of which was at the weekend against Hamburg - and two Champions League fixtures.
Due to both Muller and Rodriguez being unavailable, Heynckes's has gone for Thiago Alcantara. This moves us nicely onto the lineups for this evening's game.
LEIPZIG XI: Gulacsi; Bernardo, Orban, Upamecano, Halstenberg; Keita, Kampl; Sabitzer, Forsberg; Poulsen, Augustin
BAYERN XI: Ulreich; Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Alaba; Vidal, Tolisso; Robben, Alcantara, Coman; Lewandowski
Javi Martinez has returned to fitness after recovering from a shoulder injury, but he has not been included in Bayern's first XI this evening. Instead, Tolisso, who scored the winner against Hamburg at the weekend retains his place.
Heynckes has also opted to start a strong defence, with Jerome Boateng partnering Mats Hummels. As mentioned, Alcantara starts in place of the injured Muller. He will sit alongside Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman to provide support to Lewandowski.
As for the hosts, due to their hectic schedule changes have been made, with Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Halstenberg returning to the defence after missing last weekend's fixture. Kevin Kampl and Jean-Kevin Augustin, who were also rested, have made their way back into the starting lineup. Marcel Sabitzer also keeps his place due to an injury suffered to Bruma.
Bayern have dominated German football for some time, but the emergence of Leipzig has got everyone to sit up and take notice. The club have moved from the fifth division to the top flight in just seven seasons. For a lot of people, it would be seen as quite the success story, but to the traditionalists in Germany, Leipzig are not a club to be admired.
The majority of clubs in the Bundesliga follow the 50+1 rule, which allows fan members to have a say in the control of the club and who gets elected to the board. Leipzig have the structure in place, but members have to pay 10 times the amount that they would at Bayern and co in order to get a spot.
Leipzig moved up to the Bundesliga for the 2016-17 season and went on to stun everyone by finishing second in the league, albeit 15 points adrift of champions Bayern. The gulf in points indicate that the team still have a way to go if they want to overtake the Bavarians, but Leipzig's surge through the divisions suggests that a change could be coming in the future.
While some fans have a sour taste in the mouth when it comes to Leipzig, it cannot be denied that Ralph Hasenhuttl's side have played some exciting football. Last season, the team had the third-best attacking statistics of the Bundesliga with 66 goals to their name.
At the tender age of 21, Timo Werner finished the campaign fourth in the list of the league's top scorers with a tally of 21 goals. Putting that into context, though, Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang racked up the most (31), while Bayern's Robert Lewandowski just missed out on the top spot with 30.
At the back, Leipzig were also relatively solid, keeping 10 clean sheets and conceding 39, which gave them the third-best defence of the division. This season, the club have lost just three of their 13 matches in all competitions and they find themselves third in the league, just one point behind Dortmund and Bayern.
Hasenhuttl's team have managed to find the back of the net 25 times in all competitions, but they have struggled for clean sheets, keeping goals out on just three occasions so far, which bodes well for Bayern given that the team have scored three or more in two of their last three games.
HEAD TO HEAD: The last two matches between the clubs have been high scoring, with 12 goals hitting the net in total. The first meeting was held at the Allianz Arena and it was a fairly straightforward task for Bayern, with Lewandowski, Xabi Alonso and Alcantara getting on the scoresheet. It was a miserable day all round for Leipzig as they lost Emil Forsberg to a red card 30 minutes into the game.
Leipzig came close to getting revenge at the Red Bull Arena in May. Marcel Sabitzer put the team ahead inside the first two minutes of the match, but Lewandowski levelled things up before the 20-minute mark. A goal from Werner sent the hosts into the half-time break with the lead, but the game was far from over.
Yussuf Poulsen gave Leipzig a 3-1 lead in the second half, and Werner came to the rescue again after Alcantara pulled a goal back for Bayern. At 4-2, Leipzig were heading towards a big win, but in the final 12 minutes, five of which were in stoppage time, Lewandowski, David Alaba and Arjen Robben broke Leipzig's hearts.
PREDICTION: There is not a rich history of meetings between these two clubs, but recent encounters tell us that we should expect plenty of goals. With Muller out of action, Bayern are depleted somewhat, but they have many top-class players that can help push the team into the last 16. Leipzig have home comforts on their side and are in positive form, but if it came down to a straight shootout (which it very much could!) Bayern have the edge. We will go for a 3-2 win for the visitors.
Both sets of players have made their way out onto the pitch and we are moments away from kickoff between first and second of last season's Bundesliga!
KICKOFF! We're underway at the Red Bull Arena! Bayern get the game going wearing blue, while the hosts don their white and red strip.
Some early danger from Bayern as Kimmich gets caught on the right-hand side of the byline. Robben whips i the free kick, but the hosts manage to clear due to a punch from goalkeeper Gulasci.
The visitor have started on the frontfoot and are seeing much more of the ball than the hosts. Keia tries to make things happen for Leipzig by attempting to snatch possession back, but he ends up giving away a free kick.
Leipzig get a chance from a set piece and it's Forsberg who knocks the ball into the box, but Bayern managed to prevent the hosts from getting a shot away.
Alaba and Coman try to work the ball down the left-hand side but they get crowded out by white shits and Coman is forced to knock it back to the goalkeeper.
Forsberg is involved again for Leipzig as the forward players force the ball up the pitch. The forward tired to get on his favoured foot to unleash a shot on the edge of the area, but Bayern shirts swam around him.
CHANCE! Robben sends a lovely ball through the defenders to find Lewandowski onside, The Poland international drives to the byline before sending a low cross across goal, but Bernardo manages to kick it out for a corner, which comes to nothing.
Forsberg leaves Vidal chasing his heels as he aims for the box, but the play breaks down and the ball is forced back to Leipzig's keeper. The hosts are showing danger and pace when on the frontfoot, but they ae yet to get a shot on target.
Keita and Vidal tussle on the ball in the middle of the park and the referee blows up for a foul on the Leipzig midfielder. We could see plenty of that tonight!
Halstenberg falls awkwardly after leaping in the air for the ball. The Leipzig defender tried to challenge Kimmich in the air, and the Bayern man is penalised for a foul. It didn't seem like he did much wrong, though!
Kimmich gets the free kick this time as he tried to break through the midfield but gets brought down by Keita, who will be playing his football in the Premier League next season for Liverpool.
The set piece is poor from Bayern's point of view as it ends up bouncing off Bernardo and out for a throw-in!
At the other end, Leipzig win a corner off Vidal and it's Forsberg who takes it. The ball swings in from the right-hand side and it's headed clear by Tolisso.
Coman gets two opportunities to get down the byline and he delivers in two crosses in quick succession, but Upamecano heads both of them clear.
Robben manages to get away from two markers on the right before delivering a deep cross, but it fails to reach Coman and the ball bobbles out for a throw-in to Leipzig.
Bayern knock the ball out of play as Keita is down and clutching his ankle as a result of a crunching tackle from Vidal, but the midfielder eventually gets to his feet.
Leipzig move the ball well around the middle of the park and it eventually gets to Forsberg's feet. He charges forward before sending a low cross into the box looking for Poulsen, but the ball is cleared.
Coman dances into the centre before making a shot pass to Lewandowksi, who ends up losing the ball and Leipzig launch a counter attack.
BOOKING! As a result of Leipzig's counter, Boateng charges down Keita and pays the price by picking up a yellow card. It was probably due given that he gave away a couple of fouls earlier in the half.
His discipline may be letting him down at the moment, but Boateng just delivered a lovely ball over the top for Robben, but the Dutchman was offside.
SAVE! Thiago loses the ball in the middle of the pitch and Leipzig throw bodies forward. In the end it falls to Forsberg, who shoots from the edge of the area, but Ulreich makes his body big to deny a goal.
Brilliant play from Robben as he delivers the ball over to the far post to find Coman, who needs to stretch to get the cross in, but the ball trickles out.
SAVE! Leipzig are looking dangerous now! Keita sends a pin-pointed pass to Augustin, who turns a little before shooting, but once again Ulreich makes a crucial stop.
Bayern are struggling to get on the ball and in the last few minutes, the visitors have been unable to get out of their own half. Lewandowski must feel very isolated up front right now.
More frustration for Bayern as a late high foot from Tolisso on Poulsen gives Leipzig a free kick, which is hit into the box from Forsberg, but the visitors high line ensures that the ball bounces over everyone and out for a goal kick.
Leipzig go on the attack again! Augustin is given plenty of space as he charges towards the edge of the box. The forward has time to unleash a shot, which he directs straight at the goalkeeper.
PENALTY TO LEIPZIG!
NO PENALTY!
Oh dear, some confusion here! The referee needs to consult with his assistants due to the lack of video technology. Vidal clumsily brings Forsberg down, but the question is, was it outside or inside the box? The referee decides that it is outside. The challenge begins before Forsberg makes it into the danger area, but Vidal ends up wrapping his legs around the forward on the line.
After all that, Forsberg takes the free kick. He goes for goal by attempting to curl the ball into the top corner, but he ends up missing the target.
Another free kick for Leipzig as Robben brings down Keita. The Bayern winger is not happy! For some reason he makes a silly challenge again by fouling the Leipzig midfielder from behind.
Leipzig work the ball around the edge of the area before Sabitzer unleashes a powerful shot at goal, but it is relatively comfortably saved by the keeper.
At the other end, Alaba and Coman link up on the left before the ball is whipped into the box looking for Lewandowski, but the ball drops just behind the striker and Leipzig clear.
Leipzig fans won't like seeing this! Keita is down and receiving treatment after his foot got trodden on by Tolisso, who somehow has escaped a yellow card!
BOOKING! Keita picks up his fifth yellow card of the season in all competitions after lunging in on Thiago while trying to catch a loose ball.
SAVE! It's a comfortable stop from Gulasci as Lewandowski moves out wide before sending the ball low into the path of Tolisso, whose tame shot goes into the hands of the keeper.
HALF-TIME: LEIPZIG 0-0 BAYERN
Well, what a good game, despite the scoreline being goalless! The teams head into the dressing room all square with neither side managing to break the deadlock. Heynckes will feel that he has some work to do as his players were on the backfoot numerous times during the first half.
Leipzig have shown real danger while on the frontfoot, with Naby Keita helping orchestrate things from midfield, but the soon-to-be Liverpool player still can't help himself with regards to his disciple as he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season. Emil Forsberg has been instrumental in the home side's moves going forward, but at the moment the team have failed to get past Sven Ulreich.
The biggest talking point of the half came when Arturo Vidal brought down Forsberg in a dangerous area. The foul began outside the box as the Bayern midfielder tugged at his opponents shirt before tackling him on the line. In the end, the referee awarded a free kick, which was wasted by Forsberg. When the half-time whistle blew, members of the Leipzig technical area were visibly frustrated with the referee.
Leipzig have had the better chances and looked more promising moving forward, but with the game all square, it is anyones game! Remember, if there is not a winner by full-time, we move into extra-time and possible penalties.
RESTART! Leipzig get the second half underway! Will we get a winner within the next 45 minutes? Let's find out!
CHANCE! Good opportunity for Bayern as the ball finds kindly for Coman, who races down the left before unleashing the ball. He took a quick look to see if he could cross to Lewandowski, but instead went for goal from a tight angle. The ball ended up skying high.
Like in the start of the first half, Bayern have seen more of the ball. Robben cuts inside before unleashing a shit with his left foot, but his attempt gets blocked.
There's been more intensity from Bayern. The players are pressing high up the pitch in a bid to force an attack. They need to continue this approach if they want to prevent Leipzig from getting time on the ball.
Another penalty shout for Leipzig! A lovely ball is played into Augustin's feet from Keita. The forward turns and in doing so, Boateng gets across to nab the ball. No penalty.
RED CARD! Dear oh dear, stupid mistake from Keita! We spoke earlier about his disciplinary issues and he has just let himself down. The midfielder - already on a yellow card - pulls back Lewandowski while the forward was in full flow.
Bayern have a great opportunity to capitalise and they almost do when the ball is whipped into the box towards Lewandowski, who connects with a header but he misses the target. It wouldn't have counted anyway as the whistle went for a foul.
BAYERN, LEIPZIG SUB:The visitors take Vidal, who is on a booking, off the pitch and replaces him with Rudy. The hosts bring on Demme for Augustin.
SAVE! Alaba cuts inside before zipping the ball forward for Coman in the box. He aims for the near post and forces a save from the keeper.
BAYERN SUB: That was Coman's last involvement of the evening as he is taken off and replaced with Martinez, who is making his return from a shoulder injury.
Bayern pile pressure on the hosts as they try to find a way through in the final third. Robben whips the ball into the area, but it is comfortably collected in the air by the keeper.
Hummel uses the outside of his right boot to send the ball over the top for Lewandowski, who has to chase it down and force a corner, which comes to nothing.
MISS! Oh my! Lewandowski should have done so much better! Leipzig lose the ball and it falls nicely for the Bayern striker, who darts into the box and aims a shot towards the bottom left corner but it trickles wide.
At the other end, Leipzig get a free kick in the middle of the pitch and they hoof the ball into the box, but its cleared.
PENALTY TO LEIPZIG!
A penalty is actually given this time, but it doesn't look like it's the right decision! Seems like the referee has tried to even things up after not giving the one in the first half! On the edge of the box, Poulsen drags his leg and gets caught by Boateng.
GOAL! LEIPZIG 1-0 BAYERN (FORSBERG)
Ten-men Leipzig have taken the lead! Forsberg, who has had a positive game so far, steps up and sends the goalkeeper the wrong way. So much drama!
Bayern have plenty of time to get back into the game, but Leipzig will have their tails up despite being a man down. The crowd certainly feels like they can maintain their lead!
GOAL! LEIPZIG 1-1 BAYERN (THIAGO)
Well, that lead lasted long! Bayern are back on level terms through a lovely goal from Thiago! Boateng was at fault the other end but he played a huge part in equalising by delivering a ball over the top of the defence to Thiago, who smashed a header into the back of the net.
Worrying scenes for Poulsen as he is seen limping on the pitch and requires some treatment. It looks as though he will carry on for the time being though.
Bayern are on the attack again as Robben works the ball before sending it over to Alaba, who has to chase and ends up fouling Bernardo in the process.
SAVE! More pressure from Bayern as the ball flies into the box and ends up dropping to Thiago on the edge of the box. He catches it cleanly and whacks it wards the centre of the goal, but Gulacsi gets in the way.
LEIPZIG SUB: This could be a big moment for the hosts. Werner comes on to replace Poulsen. Could he find the winner?
The introduction of Werner could force Bayern's defenders to sit back a little due to fears of getting caught out on the break.
Bernardo sends a through-ball for Werner, but Boateng does well to play the forward offside. He would have been through on goal if the defenders were caught napping.
Thiago nudges the ball forward for Lewandowski and turns but gets swarmed by Leipzig players, who end up playing the ball out of their own half.
Bayern are seeing all of the ball right now and as expected, Leipzig are camped out in their own half in a bid to stifle them. Kimmich whips the ball into the box, but it's too far and the ball bobbles out.
BAYERN SUB: It's been a quiet night for Tolisso and he makes way for Rafinha.
Could this be the moment? Bayern are awarded a free kick in a dangerous area. Robben takes it and lifts the ball into the box to find Kimmich, who tries to glance it towards the far post, but he misses the target.
The fourth official indicates that there will be a minimum of three minutes added on. Will we get a winner?!
Oh dear, what a waste from Boateng! Bayern work the ball around the box and drop it back to Boateng, who goes for goal from distance, but ends up sending his shot into the stands.
CHANCE! Bayern continue to probe and it's Robben who gets down the left before swinging a cross into the area searching for Lewandowski, whose header goes wide.
FULL-TIME: LEIPZIG 1-1 BAYERN
The referee blows his full-time whistle and nothing can separate the two teams. Luckily for you, we have another half an hour of action and possibly penalties to decide the winner!
At this point, the game could go either way. Bayern have the one-man advantage, so the next 30 minutes will be a big test for Leipzig's fitness. There will be some very tired legs out there, but the hosts do have Timo Werner, who is relatively fresh given that he came on in the second half.
Bayern have so much quality in their team that you would expect Heynckes's side to secure their progression into the third round, but Leipzig have managed to keep them at bay since the equaliser.
RESTART! So here we go then! Leipzig get the first half of extra time underway!
Much like the second half, Bayern are on the attack straight away. Hummels feeds the ball into Lewandowski, but the striker fails to make the most of it as he allows the ball to trickle out of his reach.
Bayern are all over Leipzig, but the hosts are forcing their opponents to play out wide. Heynckes's side are struggling for joy through the middle.
BOOKING! Thiago receives a caution for a high boot on Demme. The Bayern midfielder catches his opponent in the face by trying to connect with the ball. It wasn't intentional as he had eyes on the ball, but it's an understandable booking.
The ball is lifted into the box from the free kick, but it's comfortably headed clear and Bayern get themselves back on the ball in a bid to fid the winner.
Bernardo cuts out a high ball over the top from Rudy and Leipzig launch a counter-attack, which ends in a free kick for the hosts due to a foul from Kimmich.
CHANCE! An opportunity for Leipzig as the ball is played over the top for Halstenberg, who stretches in an attempt to reach it but the ball bounces out for a goal kick.
DOUBLE SAVE! Rudy whips the ball into the area to find goalscorer Thiago who hits on the volley from close range but's stopped by the keeper, who swiftly denied Kimmich on the rebound.
LEIPZIG, BAYERN SUBS: Some changes now as Thiago makes way for Wriedt and Sabitzer comes off for Laimer.
Leipzig are holding their shape well. It's clear that they have been ordered to frustrate Bayern and try and force the contest into penalties. At the moment, it's working!
CHANCE! Relentless from Bayern as a poor clearance drops to Lewandowski, who catches the ball on the volley, but it's tipped over by the keeper.
ET HALF-TIME: LEIPZIG 1-1 BAYERN
Somehow, Bayern have not scored! Leipzig can thank Gulacsi for keeping them in the game so far. Lewandowski had the perfect opportunity to nab what could have been the winner, but we are yet to see it! Fifteen minutes to go...
RESTART! After a brief pause we're back in action. Leipzig are still within a chance of making it into the third round. Just one goal could be the difference.
OVER THE BAR! Lewandowski misses again! Robben gets a cross in, and even though it's deflected the ball finds the Polish striker, who heads over the bar.
Rudy threads the ball through to Wreidt, who manages to get to the ball on the byline and zip a cross in, but it ends up coming to nothing.
LEIPZIG SUB: Interestingly, Forsberg has been replaced with Klostermann. Somewhat of an odd decision if the game goes to penalties.
Bayern lose the ball in the middle of the park and the hosts manage to win a free kick after Wreidt brings down Klostermann close to the box.
The free kick comes in and meets Klostermann, who heads towards the top corner, but he misses the target and the chance goes begging.
At the other end, Bayern squander more chances, with Alaba slipping as he takes a shot while Rudy's rebound ends up getting blocked.
OFFISDE! So close! Werner splits the defenders and manages to get around the goalkeeper and slot the ball home, but he was marginally offside.
With five minutes plus added time on the clock, it looks as though we are heading towards a penalty shootout. Leipzig have stayed very organised and in all honesty, the hosts deserve to take it to the spot kick.
CHANCE! Another opportunity for Werner! The forward receives the ball on the edge of the box and aims it low and hard towards the bottom left corner, but it just drifts wide.
At the other end, Bayern get a free kick in a decent area, but it's wasted by Rudy as he misses his teammates and the ball bounces out for a goal kick.
CHANCE! Oh my! Laimer has just missed the chance to score the winner for Leipzig! His run is spotted by Demme, who lifts the ball forward for the midfielder, who tries to chest it down and fails to get a shot away. With the goalkeeper off his line, Laimer would have arguably scored if he had headed the ball instead.
WE GO TO PENALTIES!
Here we go then! Bayern will get the chance to score first!
GOAL! LEIPZIG 0-1 BAYERN (LEWANDOWSKI)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 1-1 BAYERN (BERNARDO)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 1-2 BAYERN (ALABA)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 2-2 BAYERN (KAMPL)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 2-3 BAYERN (HUMMELS)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 3-3 BAYERN (HALSTENBERG)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 3-4 BAYERN (RUDY)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 4-4 BAYERN (ORBAN)
GOAL! LEIPZIG 4-5 BAYERN (ROBBEN)
SAVE! LEIPZIG 4-5 BAYERN (WERNER)
BAYERN WIN 5-4 ON PENALTIES!
Well, there we have it! Bayern move into the third round of the DFB-Pokal after beating Leipzig on penalties. For a man that has scored so many important goals for the hosts, Timo Werner missed from the spot to hand the victory to the Bavarians.
Losing in a shootout is always a cruel way to go, but Leipzig can be proud that they pushed the Bundesliga giants to the very end. The result extends Bayern's winning run to four matches since Heynckes returned to the club. Thank you for joining us this evening, and until next time, goodnight!
