Luis Enrique: 'Lionel Messi deserves Ballon d'Or'

Luis Enrique believes that Lionel Messi deserves to win the Ballon d'Or.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has claimed that Lionel Messi deserves to win the Ballon d'Or ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

UEFA president Michel Platini believes that a German deserves to win the accolade after the country's World Cup triumph.

Real Madrid released a statement regarding Platini's comments, but Enrique played down the debate and says that if it were down to him, he would choose the Argentine.

"I don't want to exacerbate things with Real Madrid after what Platini said, but everyone is allowed their own opinion," the 44-year-old told reporters.

"This prize is for the best player of the season and that is Messi, so I would give the Ballon d'Or to Leo."

Messi broke goalscoring records in both La Liga and the Champions League, with hat-tricks against Sevilla and APOEL earlier this week.
