York City have beaten Bradford City on penalties in the League Cup.

After a quiet opening 20 minutes, Christopher Routis injected some life into the match when he directed the ball into the top right corner from an Alan Sheehan cross.

Sheehan, a free kick specialist, had a chance to double the lead just two minutes later, but his set piece was saved by Scott Flinders.

Routis nearly added a second with five minutes of the first half remaining, but his shot went wide of the target.

Just three minutes after the restart, Reece Thompson was fouled in the penalty area and Luke Summerfield placed his spot kick into the net to level the score.

Steve Davies's shot in the 52nd minute was heading towards the top right corner but Flinders kept the ball out of the net.

Davies was causing more problems with 20 minutes remaining. He was felled in the area but Sheehan sliced his penalty over the crossbar.

Bradford were made to pay for that missed penalty with six minutes remaining, as James Berrett's strike from outside the penalty area nestled into the top left corner.

With York seemingly through to the next round, James Hanson struck in the 93rd minute to force the match into extra time.

It was Hanson who came closest to giving his team the lead at the start of extra time, but his header rebounded off the crossbar.

York won the penalty shootout 4-2 after Tony McMahon and Routis missed.
