Raphael Varane points to a team failure as to why Real Madrid were thrashed 4-1 by Borussia Dortmund.

Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane has admitted that the 4-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semi-finals shocked him.

Varane said that the team were unable to cope with Dortmund's pressing and in particular Robert Lewandowski, who scored four in the contest.

"We didn't expect a result like this," UEFA.com quotes Varane as saying. "We expected a much more positive result.

"We approached the game with plenty of ambition. We went down to a very aggressive team who were compact and gave us no space.

"Lewandowski played really well and we failed to stop him. It's more a team failure than an individual one."

The second leg takes place next Tuesday night.
