Rangers will reportedly slash their asking price for club captain James Tavernier in order to free up funds for the summer transfer window.

Manager Steven Gerrard is hoping to have money to spend in order to strengthen his squad to compete with rivals Celtic for the title next season.

Rangers have slipped 13 points behind their Glaswegian rivals in the Scottish Premiership with surprise losses to both Hearts and Hamilton Academical since the turn of the year.

Football Insider reports that Rangers once valued Tavernier at £8m, but are now willing to let the right-back leave Ibrox for around half that figure.

Tavernier has recently come under fire after several comments from the Englishman suggesting that Rangers cannot handle the pressure.

The 28-year-old has previously been linked with Premier League clubs including Newcastle United and Aston Villa as well as Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion.

Tavernier joined Rangers in 2015 from Wigan Athletic and has since made 241 appearances for the club.
