Late goals send Chesterfield top with win at 10-man Portsmouth

Chesterfield leave it late for the second consecutive game as two goals in the last three minutes see them record a 2-0 win at 10-man Portsmouth.

Chesterfield left it late for the second consecutive game as two goals in the last three minutes saw them record a 2-0 win at 10-man Portsmouth.

Armand Gnanduillet, who struck an injury-time winner in last weekend's 2-1 win over Southend, headed the Spireites in front after 87 minutes at Fratton Park.

Tendayi Darwikwa then scored his first goal of the season in added time to give the scoreline a deceptively comfortable appearance.

Portsmouth had looked on course to earn a respectable point, despite playing the entire second half a man light.

An otherwise forgettable first half caught fire just before the interval when David Connolly went down in the penalty area under a strong challenge from Sam Hird.

Pompey's appeals for a spot kick were turned down by referee Steve Bratt, who enhanced his reputation as villain moments later when he sent Connolly off - the forward's first dismissal of his career.

Connolly was shown a straight red card after he was adjudged to have thrown an off-the-ball elbow at Hird.

Portsmouth appeared to be inspired by their numerical disadvantage and more than held their own during the majority of what was a very tight second half.

However, Gnanduillet's late intervention broke the hosts' spirit, before Darwikwa ensured that Chesterfield's best start to a season in 13 years would continue.

The result sends the Spireites top of League Two. They leapfrog Oxford United, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Rochdale.
