Sepp Blatter re-elected as FIFA president after Prince Ali withdraws

Sepp Blatter is re-elected as FIFA president after Prince Ali concedes defeat, despite forcing the vote into a second round.

Sepp Blatter has been re-elected as FIFA president after Prince Ali conceded defeat, despite forcing the vote into a second round.

The 79-year-old has been handed a fifth term in office and will stand for another four years as the head of football's world governing body.

Many members, including UEFA president Michel Platini and Football Association chairman Greg Dyke, called for Blatter to be removed from his role following the latest corruption scandal.

On Wednesday, seven football officials were arrested in Zurich on suspicion of corruption, money laundering and racketeering following allegations that more than $100m (£65m) was accepted in bribes from the 1990s to the present day.

Prior to this week's scandal, Blatter was widely expected to be re-elected with two third of the vote, but Prince Ali came closer than expected and forced proceedings into a second round of voting.

However, moments before member associations voted again, Prince Ali announced to Congress that he was withdrawing from the race and thanked those "brave enough" to vote for him.
