Sir Alex Ferguson: 'Robin van Persie should ignore booing'

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Robin van Persie should not be bothered if he is booed by Arsenal supporters on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that it has become part of the "modern generation" for fans to boo their former players.

Robin van Persie returns to Arsenal on Sunday for the first time since his departure from the Gunners last summer, and Ferguson has admitted that he expects the Dutch international to receive taunts at the Emirates Stadium.

The 71-year-old told reporters: "I don't bother about it, and I don't think Robin should bother about it either. There was a bit of booing when he played at Old Trafford and I expect a portion of fans will do that. That is the modern generation I am afraid.

"For Arsenal to have one of their players go to their biggest rivals of the last 20 years doesn't sit well with their fans, nor Arsene for that matter.

"But it does happen. You just have to move on. Arsenal have moved on now. They are challenging for a Champions League place and have every chance of getting one."

The 29-year-old has scored 28 times in 44 appearances for United this season.
