Belgium boss Roberto Martinez: 'Vincent Kompany is not injured'

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez confirms that Vincent Kompany has not suffered an injury, despite pulling out of the lineup minutes before kickoff.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has attempted to clarify concerns over Vincent Kompany's fitness by insisting that the defender has not suffered a fresh injury.

The Manchester City centre-back withdrew from the Belgium team just minutes before their international friendly with the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

There were reports that Kompany felt discomfort in his ankle during the warm-up, which sparked rumours that the 30-year-old had been dealt another setback following 12 months of injury woe.

Martinez has claimed, though, that the defender took himself out of the starting lineup purely as a precaution, but he is a doubt for Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Estonia.

The Spaniard told reporters: "There is no injury to Vincent Kompany. We did not want to take any risks with him and Kompany did not feel well after the warm-up.

"I want every player to be 100%. I would be surprised if he can play Sunday, but it is still too early to say. We will have to assess the situation, especially with his club. If he is not ready, I will take another defender."

Kompany has featured in just two league games this season.
