Liverpool are not opening contract talks with Virgil van Dijk despite recent speculation, according to a report.

Liverpool are reportedly not opening contract talks with Virgil van Dijk despite recent speculation.

The Netherlands international, who moved to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018, still has little under four years left to run on his current deal with Jurgen Klopp's side.

A report over the weekend had claimed that the central defender was on the verge of penning a new contract worth £200,000 a week.

However, according to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds 'have no imminent plans' to open talks with the 28-year-old, who has been left 'bemused' by the recent suggestions.

Van Dijk - regarded as one of the favourites to win this year's Ballon d'Or - has established himself as one of the leading centre-backs in world football over the last 12 months.

Liverpool will attempt to make it five straight wins at the start of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign when they host Newcastle United next weekend.
