Steven Gerrard says that Liverpool must target finishing above Everton this season.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has targeted finishing above Everton at the end of the season as they look to secure a place in Europe.

The Reds are in top form at the moment, and moved above their Merseyside rivals in the Premier League on Sunday after beating fellow Champions League challengers Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield.

While his side have played a game more than the Toffees, Gerrard is hoping that Liverpool can stay above Everton in the table.

"When we went out of the Europa League, the message from the manager and the staff was that we needed to try to win as many of our remaining games as possible and try to finish as high as possible," Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.

"Our form is good but we can't afford to get carried away just because we've beaten Tottenham. We need to show what we've shown today in all of our remaining games. We want to finish above Everton and as high as we can in the league."

Liverpool travel to Southampton on Saturday.
