Barcelona reportedly put contract talks with highly-rated 17-year-old midfielder Gavi on hold until next year, despite interest from Liverpool and Chelsea.

Barcelona have reportedly put contract talks with midfielder Gavi on hold until the New Year.

The 17-year-old has established himself as an important member of the Barcelona first team this season, featuring 20 times including in all six of their Champions League group games.

Gavi's current deal does not expire until 2023, but it does include a €50m (£42.5m) release clause, which has alerted the attention of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Marca reports that Barcelona have been in talks over a new contract with the youngster for months, but that no agreement has yet been reached.

The Blaugrana have now put negotiations on hold until next year, although both the club and the player reportedly expect to eventually reach common ground.

New Barca boss Xavi is keen to base his rebuild of Barcelona on youth, and the club have already tied down the likes of Ansu Fati, Pedri and Nico Gonzalez to new contracts.

Gavi's future is their next priority to sort, having deemed the teen 'non-transferrable'.

In addition to making the breakthrough into the Barcelona first team, Gavi has also made his first appearances for Spain this year and already has four caps to his name.
