Middlesbrough beat Bury 2-1 at Gigg Lane to head into the second round of the League Cup.

Middlebrough beat Bury 2-1 at Gigg Lane to win the first round of the League Cup this afternoon.

The game got off to a lively start as Middlebrough had a half chance after Muzzy Carayol's low cross nearly met Bailey, though it was cleared by the Bury defence.

The home side gradually started to get into the game and David Worrall's cross from the right worried Middlesbrough defence, though Jason Steele dealt with the danger.

Worrall was the danger man again soon after, however this time his cross was put over the bar by Bury captain Steven Schumacher.

The away side dominated possession and, after 33 minutes, finally made the breakthrough. A quick free kick from Leadbitter found Marvin Emnes, whose swerving shot from 20 yard out flew into the bottom corner.

The half-time whistle blew with Middlesbrough deservedly in the lead.

The second half continued with the away side dominating possession as Bury tried to get themselves back into the game.

However, it was Tony Mowbray's side that extended their lead when Leadbitter made it 2-0 on 61 minutes.

Three minutes later, Bury pulled a goal back through Mark Hughes and then went looking for the equaliser.

Bury had Efetebore Sodje sent off near the end of the game for violent conduct.

The home side could not find another goal, though, and it was Middlebrough that went into the draw for the second round.
