Sean Dyche's side should have taken the lead early on when Junior Stanislas's set piece evaded Watford defenders and Kevin Long was free at the back post, but he couldn't make contact with the ball with the goal gaping.

The visitors tried to get back into the game and almost went ahead when Troy Deeney released the run of Cristian Battocchio and played the midfielder through on goal, but he scuffed his effort and failed to lift the ball over Tom Heaton.

Burnley had a great chance to take the lead just before the break when Stanislas again caused problems this time down the left as his pinpoint cross into the area was met by Scott Arfield, who headed low at goal but Jonathan Bond was there to make a good save.

After the break, Watford came out and began to dominate possession. Lewis McGugan went close with a powerful volley and Heaton had to be at his best to parry away from goal.

Minutes later, the visitors worked the ball nicely down the right and space opened up for an effort from Scott Murray but Ben Mee did well to throw himself in the way of the ball to make a crucial block to abate the danger.

Burnley were grateful to Mee yet again as Murray raided down the right and lifted a cross to the back post where he found McGugan, who took a touch and fired at goal his effort beat Heaton but Mee was there to head the ball off the line.
