Brentford sign Leicester City defender

Brentford complete a one-year loan deal for young Leicester City left-back Callum Elder.

Brentford have completed the signing of Leicester City left-back Callum Elder on a one-season loan deal.

The 21-year-old Australian came through the youth ranks at the Foxes and has previously had loan spells at Mansfield Town and Peterborough United, although he is yet to make his first-team debut for the Premier League champions.

Bees head coach Dean Smith said: "Callum is an attacking full-back. He comes highly recommended and I believe there is further development in him. He is also a player that can improve the squad now.

"Callum came to my attention when he played for Peterborough against my Walsall team. He did very well that day and I have been watching him ever since although it was unfortunate he had to cut short that loan spell due to injury. I am pleased to welcome him to Brentford."

Elder, who took in his first training session at Brentford yesterday, said that he felt the time was right to test himself at Championship level.

"I am really looking forward to it," he told the club's official website. "Playing in big games, in front of big crowds, is what you want to do on a matchday. There are some huge clubs that have come down from the Premier League.

"I can't wait to get stuck into the season and hopefully have a good go with the club. Both Leicester and myself felt that this was the right time to go out and experience Championship football.

"A season-long loan gives me security in the fact that it gives me time to gel with the lads but it doesn't give me security in terms of performances. I need to get stuck into training and into the games."

Brentford kick off their Championship campaign when they travel to Huddersfield Town next Saturday.
