Half-Time Report: Lionel Messi opens the scoring against Ajax

Lionel Messi scores the only goal of the first half to give Barcelona a 1-0 lead over Ajax.

Lionel Messi's free kick has given Barcelona a 1-0 lead over Ajax after 45 minutes of their Champions League meeting at Camp Nou.

Barcelona dominated possession from the first whistle and had an early sight of goal when Neymar picked out Cesc Fabregas, who fired his effort over the crossbar.

Ajax started to enjoy their own share of possession as the first half progressed, but Barcelona took control of the contest when the opening goal arrived in the 22nd minute.

Messi scored his 60th Champions League goal with a free kick that struck the inside of the post before hitting the back of the net.

Ricardo van Rhijn had a great opportunity to level the scores before the break, but his header was easily saved by Victor Valdes.

Lerin Duarte was allowed pacce on the edge of the box just moments later but he was also denied by Valdes, who displayed great reactions to keep his side ahead.
