Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a January move for former Everton defender Ben Godfrey to help ease their defensive injury crisis.

Tottenham Hotspur are considering a January move for former Everton defender Ben Godfrey to bolster their defence, according to a report.

Spurs have been ravaged by injuries in defence this season, with Cristian Romero (thigh) and Micky Van de Ven (hamstring) both sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Additionally, Ben Davies, who has predominantly played as a centre-back in recent years, is also out of action due to a hamstring injury sustained in the loss to Bournemouth at the start of the month.

The Lilywhites' injury setbacks have forced Ange Postecoglou to deploy Archie Gray out of position alongside Radu Dragusin in central defence, but so far, the pairing have struggled mightily, conceding nine goals in their last two matches.

Spurs eyeing Godfrey to help ease defensive injury crisis

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are now scouring the market to provide Postecoglou with reinforcements in January.

Strengthening in defence is a priority for the North London side, and according to the report, they have already reached out to Atalanta BC regarding a potential move for Ben Godfrey.

The 26-year-old joined Atalanta for around £11m last summer, but he has struggled to secure a regular place in Gian Piero Gasperini's league-leading team, playing just 93 minutes across all competitions this term.

It is understood that Spurs are interested in signing the Englishman on a short-term loan for the second half of the season while their current crop works their way back to full fitness.

However, with La Dea currently topping Serie A, they may be reluctant to make any moves that could jeopardise their title challenge.

Additional defensive reinforcements expected in January

Godfrey is not the only player who Spurs are eyeing to help bolster their defence, as a report from The Sun this week indicates that they are also considering signing a new goalkeeper.

Guglielmo Vicario's serious injury has thrust Fraser Forster into the starting XI, but Tottenham are facing a shortage of quality depth behind the 36-year-old goalkeeper.

There is also a belief that, due to his age, Forster cannot be relied upon as a long-term solution, prompting Tottenham to seek greater stability in the goalkeeper position.

The player rumoured to be among the top choices on the Lilywhites' wishlist is Burnley shot-stopper James Trafford, who received his first call-up to the England squad last month.

The 22-year-old, who is believed to be valued at around £20m, joined Burnley in the summer of 2023 and made 28 appearances for the club in the Premier League last season.
