Miguel Angel Moya: 'It could have been worse for Atletico Madrid'

Miguel Angel Moya claims that Atletico Madrid could have fared worse after their 1-0 Champions League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Atletico Madrid keeper Miguel Angel Moya has admitted that his team are lucky to escape with a 1-0 deficit after the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Bayer Leverkusen.

Diego Simeone's men, who came within minutes of winning last year's competition, were beaten thanks to Hakan Calhanoglu's solitary strike at the BayArena.

However, Moya believes that Leverkusen could have taken more from the first leg.

He is quoted by UEFA.com as saying: "It could have been worse. It wasn't the result we wanted, but in the last few minutes we hung on as we believed 1-0 would be a decent result going into the second leg.

"The first half was divided in two - in the first bit Leverkusen were better and in the final minutes we had a couple of chances but we got to the break 0-0.

"The second half was very even but they were forceful. Leverkusen were intense, and they made things very hard for us. They played well and took advantages of the space they had."

Atleti were down to 10 men for the final 14 minutes when veteran midfielder Tiago Mendes was given a second yellow card late on.
