Per Mertesacker expects Arsenal response against Liverpool

Per Mertesacker expects Arsenal to rise to the occasion of playing Liverpool next week.

Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker has said that they won't be complacent when they face Liverpool on Monday night.

The Gunners have had a mixed start to the season, with an away win at Crystal Palace following a home defeat by West Ham United, and Mertesacker has urged his teammates to learn from their mistakes against the Hammers.

He is quoted as saying by The Mirror: "Last week was a reminder to ourselves to just be aware everywhere in the Premier League there is big competition. It is a Monday night game, so everyone will have played in front of us. It is important that you get some points to get in a better situation.

"It is the start of the season and we praised ourselves for a good end to last season, but we wanted to start stronger.

"Liverpool is obviously a very important game. It is an opponent which has invested a lot of money and will be great competition to play against, especially at home. We want to give something back to our crowd after the start against West Ham."

The Gunners beat Liverpool 4-1 in this fixture last season.
