Sochi winner left without medal

Sochi organisers are caught short after the alpine skiing event finishes as a tie for first place.

Sochi organisers were caught short after a joint-finish in the alpine skiing event left two competitors tied for gold.

Slovenia's Tina Maze and Switzerland's Dominique Geesin finished with identical times of 1:41.57, leading to the first tie in the event's history.

Medal maker Adamas prepared some extra medals for such a scenario, though the gold medals were not personalised for the women's downhill event.

Reports suggest that Maze received the original gold, with Geesin being handed a replica.

It was the eighth time in Winter Olympics history that a gold medal has been awarded to two competitors.
