Major developments are underway at the highest levels of the floundering Aston Martin team.

Still under the management of Flavio Briatore, Fernando Alonso has openly voiced his dissatisfaction with the Silverstone-based team's poor performance this season. Speaking to Italian radio Rai about Aston Martin, Briatore stated, "They have made a lot of mistakes despite the investments made by Lawrence Stroll."

"At Alpine, we already take points from them almost every Sunday now just because Aston Martin is not in the position they should be in."

According to Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport, Aston Martin is contemplating the appointment of Andy Cowell, the former head of Mercedes engines, as their new CEO.

This position is "currently occupied by Martin Whitmarsh."

The news suggests that the arrival of Cowell might dash the aspirations of Mattia Binotto, the ex-Ferrari chief, who was also recently in the running for a senior role at Aston Martin.

Cowell, a British national aged 55, departed from Mercedes and Formula 1 in 2020.

La Gazzetta dello Sport notes, "Lawrence Stroll is looking for a technical-managerial figure of reference. And Cowell, with his 16-year winning experience at Mercedes, is certainly authoritative."
