World number five Petra Kvitova booked her place in round three of the US Open thanks to a 6-4 6-3 victory over Alize Cornet this evening.
The opening set was evenly contested until 22-year-old Kvitova claimed a decisive break of Cornet's serve, which in turn allowed her to serve out for the opening set.
That success appeared to give the Czech Republic number one confidence heading into the second set, where she claimed an early break to lead 5-2 at one stage.
She then held her nerve to win her next service game to secure her spot in the next round, where she will take on either Yanina Wickmayer or Pauline Parmentier.
