Gilles Simon has overcome Jurgen Melzer 6-4 6-2 to book a place in the second round of the Shanghai Masters.
The Frenchman took the first break of the contest and executed strong forehands to retain his serve and put his Austrian opponent on the backfoot.
Simon continued his dominance and while Melzer displayed some impressive returns, it wasn't enough to harm the serve of Simon.
The Frenchman grabbed yet another vital break, which gave him that extra push to double his break points score in the second set and take the match.
