Serena Williams will be crowned women's world number one if she reaches the semi-finals of the Qatar Open.

American Serena Williams has the opportunity to regain top spot in the WTA rankings over the next few days.

The 15-time Grand Slam champion will achieve the feat if she is able to reach the semi-finals of the Qatar Open, which gets underway today.

It will be the first time that Williams has held the position since October 2010.

Should Williams falter, current number one Victoria Azarenka will keep hold of the position if she qualifies for the final.

Third-ranked Maria Sharapova also has the opportunity to claim top spot, but would need Williams and Azarenka to fail to reach the semi-final and final respectively.
