The French Tennis Federation says that it was 'astonished' to hear that a Paris tribunal had ruled against a planned expansion of Roland Garros.

The French Tennis Federation has said that it was astonished to hear that a Paris tribunal had ruled against an expansion of Roland Garros.

Plans to redevelop the French Open site, that included installing a roof on the main Philippe Chatrier showcourt, were approved two years ago but there was opposition that claimed the work would damage the environment.

Now a tribunal in the French capital has ruled in favour of those against the plans and upset the FFT.

In a statement, the FFT said: "The French Tennis Federation noted with astonishment the decision of the administrative tribunal of Paris on the agreement allowing it to bring the project to modernise Stade Roland Garros.

"Contesting the grounds for cancellation, and convinced that the project is respectful of the site, it will appeal the decision and request a stay of execution."

Last year's singles titles were won by Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova.
