Ekaterina Makarova has pulled off a shock to beat Vera Zvonareva in a straight-sets victory.
An incredibly even first set between the two Russian players had to be decided by a tie break, with Makarova finally taking advantage to take it 7-9 and the set 6-7.
Makarova, buoyed by the first set, started the second set strongly and broke serve to race into a 0-3 lead. The number seven seed tried to initiate a comeback but Makarova began to dominate the court.
Makarova broke serve again with a blistering forehand for which Zvonareva had no answer. She then went on to serve for a place in the next round and took the set 1-6.
Zvonareva, a former semi-finalist in the Australian Open, left the court visibly upset and frustrated with her performance.
Makarov now potentially faces a fourth-round tie against Serena Williams.
