Leicester Tigers "disappointed" by Rugby World Cup stadium snub

Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom expresses his disappointment after Welford Road is left out of the 17-stadium shortlist of 2015 Rugby World Cup venues.

Leicester Tigers have admitted that they are 'disappointed and confused' by Welford Road's omission from the Rugby World Cup stadium shortlist.

A list of potential venues was announced earlier today, with the home of the Tigers surprisingly not included among the 17 arenas.

Welford Road is England's biggest club rugby ground, but has been snubbed in favour of larger stadiums most commonly used to host Premier League and Championship football.

Leicester chairman Peter Tom has questioned the decision, saying: "Welford Road has hosted many major occasions over the years, including visits from South Africa, Australia and Argentina national teams in recent seasons.

"It is home to the best-supported and most successful club in the history of the professional game in this country and, as such, we believe is worthy of Rugby World Cup status.

"That the organisers of RWC2015 do not think this an appropriate venue for its fixtures is disappointing and confusing - both for the professional club game in this country and for its supporters."

However, the city of Leicester is represented, with the King Power Stadium included on the shortlist, which is available in full here.
