Harlequins winger Tom Williams to retire in summer

Harlequins winger Tom Williams announces that he will retire from professional rugby in the summer.

Harlequins winger Tom Williams has confirmed that he will retire from professional rugby at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has scored 65 tries in 214 games for the club since his debut in 2004.

Williams was part of the Quins team that won the European Challenge Cup, Aviva Premiership and LV= Cup between 2011 and 2013.

He also served a four-month ban for his part in the 'Bloodgate' scandal at the club back in 2009.

Williams was found to have faked a blood injury during a Heineken Cup tie against Leinster in order to allow teammate Nick Evans to return to the field. Dean Richards, who was coach at the time, was given a three-year suspension for his part in the incident.

"It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that my playing time with Harlequins is over," he is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. "From my debut until my last game I can't express the excitement and pride I have felt every time I have pulled on the Harlequins jersey.

"Time and injury have caught up with me over the last two years and while I may have one or two regrets, I can look back on my career with Harlequins with immense pride."

Williams has made just four appearances for Harlequins during the current campaign.
