James O'Connor faces disciplinary action for missing the official unveiling of Australia's World Cup after reportedly sleeping through his alarm.

Australian rugby player James O'Connor could be disciplined after he missed the official unveiling of the Australian World Cup squad on Thursday.

The 21-year-old was said to have been absent due to "personal reasons", but reports have surfaced alleging that he overslept after a night out drinking with friends.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that the player was seen drinking in a pub in the Eastern Suburbs of Australia on Wednesday night.

O'Connor slept through his alarm on Thursday and missed a team meeting, an official team photo shoot and the unveiling of Australia's 30-man World Cup squad at Sydney Airport.

“James informed us on the morning of the squad announcement he was unable to be present," said an Australia Rugby Union spokesman.

“We have requested James provide us with a full explanation for his non-appearance. Until such time [as] we have received that explanation, we are not in a position to comment further.”

O'Connor, who was the only member of the 30-man squad to miss Thursday's unveiling, could be left out of Australia's final Tri-Nations match against New Zealand in Brisbane on Saturday, August 27.
