Toulouse were ahead in the ninth minute as Oscar Trejo broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion by shrugging off three Rennes defenders before curling home from just inside the box.
Tongo Doumbia should have doubled his side's lead a few moments later, but he could only drag an effort wide of the post after sprinting clear of the last Rennes defender.
Rennes recovered well to limit the chances on offer to the hosts for the rest of the first half, despite being forced to spend long spells on the back foot.
An improvement from the visitors in the second half seemed as if it would not be rewarded until the 82nd minute when Ola Toivonen looked to have secured them a point by smashing home from close range, after Toulouse had twice missed the chance to clear the danger.
However, there was another twist two minutes later as Pesic converted from a few yards out, after Doumbia's header had been deflected against the crossbar.
