Preview: Switzerland Women vs. Netherlands Women - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's European Championship clash between Switzerland Women and Netherlands Women, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Switzerland Women will be aiming to clinch their first victory of the Women's Euro 2022 when they face the Netherlands Women at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

The Netherlands currently sit top of Group C and require just one point to reach the quarter-finals, while even a win for Switzerland may not be enough for them to progress to the knockout rounds.

Switzerland are dreaming of reaching the European Championship knockout rounds for the first time in their history, however, they have a mountain to climb in their final group game to realise that dream.

Nils Nielsen's side are currently level on one point with Portugal, while they are three points adrift of Sweden and the Netherlands, who occupy the top two.

They began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Portugal, which may have felt like a defeat after Switzerland squandered a two-goal lead.

Sweden awaited on matchday two, and although Ramona Bachmann cancelled out Fridolina Rolfo's opener, a Hanna Bennison winner condemned Switzerland to a 2-1 defeat.

Switzerland know that if they clinch three points on Sunday and Sweden avoid defeat to Portugal then they will move above the Netherlands by virtual of a better head-to-head record, but a Switzerland win combined with a Portugal victory would see all teams finish level on four points and a number of permutations come into play.

While their opponents require a victory, the Netherlands know that a point would be enough to secure them a place in the quarter-finals.

After drawing 1-1 with Sweden in their opening game, the reigning European champions recorded their first victory of the tournament on matchday two, edging out Portugal via a 3-2 scoreline.

The Netherlands looked set to cruise to victory against Portugal after Damaris Egurrola and Stephanie van der Gragt grabbed a goal apiece within 16 minutes of kick-off, however, strikes from Carole Costa and Diana Silva saw the two-goal deficit wiped out.

Despite squandering a two-goal lead the Netherlands still managed to clinch their first victory of the tournament after Danielle van de Donk made it 3-2 in the 62nd minute.

Mark Parsons will now be preparing his side for Sunday's contest where they will be looking to avoid defeat to progress from the group stage and extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

Team News

After coming into the Switzerland side to face Sweden, Luana Buhler is set to retain her place in the backline, with Nielsen expected to name an unchanged lineup.

Buhler will partner Viola Calligaris in the centre of defence, while Noelle Maritz and Eseosa Aigbogun will continue in their full-back roles.

Bachmann will be one of Switzerland's main goal threats after opening her account for the tournament against Sweden.

As for the Netherlands, Daphne van Domselaar will continue in goal after first-choice goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal was ruled out for the tournament after sustaining a shoulder injury in the opening game against Sweden.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands will be hoping to have Jackie Groenen and Vivianne Miedema available after the pair missed the win over Portugal due to positive COVID-19 tests.

While Miedema could replace Lineth Beerensteyn in the front line, Groenen may have to settle for a place on the bench if Parsons decides to retain the same midfield three that started on Wednesday.

Switzerland Women possible starting lineup:
Thalmann; Maritz, Calligaris, Buhler, Aigbogun; Walti, Maendly; Crnogorcevic, Sow, Reuteler; Bachmann

Netherlands Women possible starting lineup:
Van Domselaar; Wilms, Van der Gragt, Janssen, Olislagers; Spitse, Roord, Egurrola; Van de Donk, Martens, Miedema

We say: Switzerland Women 1-3 Netherlands Women

Switzerland could throw caution to the win in search of the victory that they require to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals, and we think that could play into the hands of the Netherlands who possess the quality in attack to take advantage of any gaps left in behind, which we believe will lead to them clinching all three points.
