Crystal Palace battle to draw against Swansea City

Crystal Palace distance themselves from the relegation zone by securing a 1-1 draw against Swansea City.

Crystal Palace have distanced themselves from the relegation places in the Premier League after battling to a 1-1 draw against Swansea City this afternoon.

Wilfried Bony had given Swansea the lead with his 18th goal in 2014 before Mile Jedinak levelled things up for Palace from the spot.

Swansea looked confident during the game's opening exchanges and Garry Monk's side saw a lot of the ball early on.

There were shouts for a penalty from the home side as Bony slipped in Neil Taylor, but he hit the deck too early and the appeals were waved away.

A goal was coming and Bony was the one to get it as he made it six goals in seven games in the league.

The Ivorian was found by Gylfi Sigurdsson and he took one touch before turning on the spot and powering past a hapless Julian Speroni.

The goal signalled a period of dominance for the hosts as Palace struggled to contain the attacking trio of Bony, Sigurdsson and Jefferson Montero.

Palace hung on and got themselves back in the game with a Jedinak penalty against the run of play after Jonjo Shelvey had challenged Marouane Chamakh in the box.

Yannick Bolasie then cut in from the left and launched a drive towards the Swansea net, which flicked off the bar.

Both teams came out for the second half in determined mood and Shelvey came close to making up for his error by bringing down a cross from the right on his chest before powering a shot first time at Speroni, which was saved.

The Palace keeper was then forced to make another good stop after Sigurdsson displayed good technique to hit a volley out of the air and towards goal.

Neither side could find a winner, however, meaning that they both had to settle for a point.
