Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly targeted Everton's James McCarthy as an alternative for Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin.

Roberto Martinez allegedly values McCarthy at £25m in the hope of putting off potential suitors, but Spurs could be willing to break the bank to prise the midfielder away from Merseyside.

Mauricio Pochettino is looking to bolster his options in his already-packed midfield and sees McCarthy as the perfect alternative to Schneiderlin, who looks to be out of reach, according to The Mirror.

McCarthy, who joined the Toffees in 2013 from Wigan in a £13m deal, is reportedly due to renegotiate his contract with Everton and will put Premier League clubs on high alert if talks are unsuccessful.

Spurs are in the market and are looking to make some changes to their squad, with targets like West Bromwich Albion's Saido Berahino and Burnley's Danny Ings rumoured to be high priorities.
