Jack Butland was kept busy in the Stoke goal in the opening 10 minutes as Christian Eriksen was given space in the box, forcing a save from the keeper, before testing him with a free kick a couple of minutes later.
Stoke were involved down the other end shortly after though as Mame Biram Diouf pounced on a loose ball in the box after Hugo Lloris tried to punch it away, but the Frenchman made amends with a diving stop.
However, it was the home side that continued to see the majority of the ball, and they broke the deadlock with less than 20 minutes gone as Eriksen crossed the ball in from a corner, setting up Eric Dier for a header.
Harry Kane thought that he had doubled Tottenham's lead just after the half-hour mark when he tapped in from an Eriksen cross, but the striker was flagged offside, forcing the referee to rule out the finish.
Tottenham did make it two during injury time though, with Nacer Chadli scoring following a quick break after Lloris had denied Diouf an equaliser for Stoke moments earlier.
