Southampton announce the signing of Polish goalkeeper Mateusz Lis on a five-year contract, pending work permit approval.

Southampton have announced the signing of Polish goalkeeper Mateusz Lis on a five-year contract, pending work permit approval.

The 25-year-old will officially join the club as a free agent on July 1 when his contract with Turkish outfit Altay expires at the end of this month.

Lis becomes the second goalkeeper to join the Saints on Friday, following the announcement that 20-year-old Gavin Bazunu has completed his move from Manchester City on a permanent deal.

Speaking to the club's official website on Lis's arrival, head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl said: "Mateusz is a player who has a lot of the right attributes we look for in a goalkeeper, and still with his best years ahead of him.

"Of course, it was a priority for us to strengthen this department in the summer, and Mateusz is an important addition who we hope will be able to help us in the future."

Lis began his professional career with Lech Poznan and after spending five years with the Polish giants, he joined Wisla Krakow in 2018 where he made a total of 70 appearances across all competitions.

Last summer, the shot-stopper made the switch to Altay where he kept seven clean sheets in 35 Super Lig appearances, but he was unable to help the club avoid relegation.

Lis will now compete with Bazunu for the number one jersey at Southampton ahead of their opening Premier League game of the season away at Tottenham Hotspur on August 6.
