Championship final day: The possible outcomes

Sports Mole explains all the possible outcomes from the final day of the Championship this afternoon.

Southampton's fate is in their own hands during the final day of the Championship season this afternoon.

Any victory for the Saints over Coventry City at home would secure a return to the Premier League.

However, a slip up could allow West Ham United to gain promotion at the first time of asking should they take maximum points from their encounter with Hull City at Upton Park.

If Southampton lose and the Hammers win it will mean that West Ham are automatically promoted, while a draw for Southampton will leave Sam Allardyce's side requiring a 4-0 victory to get up by virtue of goal difference.

Should Southampton suffer defeat and West Ham win 3-0, then Nigel Adkins's Saints will be promoted as they have scored more goals than the East London club.

Elsewhere, Cardiff City will claim the final playoff spot with a win or a draw from their trip to Crystal Palace.

Any defeat for the Bluebirds would open up the door for Middlesbrough, who must beat Watford at Vicarage Road to stand any chance of entering the top six.
