Malky Mackay takes interim Scotland charge

The Scottish FA announces that Malky Mackay will take temporary charge for Scotland's friendly with the Netherlands in November.

The Scottish FA has confirmed that Malky Mackay will take charge of the Scotland national team for a friendly against the Netherlands next month.

The side's failure to qualify for the World Cup playoffs led to Gordon Strachan stepping down as manager on Thursday after almost five years in charge.

The likes of David Moyes, Paul Lambert and Michael O'Neill have since been linked with landing the role, but now the SFA has confirmed that former Watford and Cardiff City boss Mackay, who has been working as performance director at the SFA since last December, will take charge in the immediate future.

In a press conference this afternoon, SFA chief exec Stewart Regan said that they will begin looking for a permanent replacement for Strachan next week.

"It's difficult to put a timescale on a replacement," he said. "We believe we can compete [financially] to get the right person for the manager's job.

"We want someone capable of getting to Euro 2020. We'll cast our net far and wide, nationality is not an issue - we want best person for the job."

The game with the Netherlands will take place at Pittodrie on November 9.
