Plymouth Arygle and Ipswich Town both seal promotion to the Championship courtesy of victories over Burton Albion and Exeter City on Saturday afternoon.

Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town will be playing Championship football next season after securing top-two finishes in League One.

The clubs in question when into their fixtures with Burton Albion and Exeter City on Saturday afternoon knowing that promotion would be guaranteed with home victories.

That is how their afternoons transpired with Plymouth edging out Burton by a 1-0 scoreline and Ipswich ruthlessly recording a 6-0 triumph against Exeter.

Plymouth had Niall Ennis to thank for their success, the striker netting his 12th goal of the season just before half time to see off the Brewers by the narrowest of margins.

In sharp contrast, Ipswich were able to cruise to maximum points versus Exeter, scoring five times in the opening 32 minutes to set up an afternoon of celebration for the Tractor Boys' supporters at Portman Road.

Conor Chaplin (2), Massimo Luongo, George Hirst and a Nathan Broadhead penalty put Ipswich in total control at the break, with Wes Burns adding to that lead shortly after half time.

Heading into the final weekend of the season, Plymouth hold a one-point advantage, with Steven Schumacher's team at Port Vale and Kieran McKenna's Ipswich side at Fleetwood Town.

The wins for Plymouth and Ipswich meant that Sheffield Wednesday's 3-0 triumph at Shrewsbury Town was effectively rendered meaningless, and the Owls now have to enter the playoffs.
